Like all other BMW race cars, the GTR came with a different engine from the S54 straight six used by the standard M3 or the CSL version. In this guise the beating heart under the hood. The E46 M3, first introduced in October, 2000, appeared worldwide with the new L S54 M-tuned engine. At the time of the car's introduction, this engine had the highest specific output naturally aspirated engine ever made by BMW (except in the McLaren F1), producing 343 horsepower (256 kW) and 365 N·m (269 lb·ft). It was only available in coupe and convertible bodies as the saloon version. Unlike the straight-six powered M3 versions, which were outpaced by the Porsche 996 GT3, the racing version of the E46 M3 GTR 16 was very successful in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), entered by Schnitzer Motorsport. Rivals such as Porsche pointed out that this car was more of a prototype as no V8 engine was available in the road-going BMW. A rare and extremely desirable 2001 BMW E46 M3 GTR has just appeared for sale in Australia. This car was brought to life through a collaboration with BMW North America and Tom Milner’s Prototype. The BMW M3 CSL E46, Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R, TVR Sagaris and original Porsche Cayman GT4 981C are all shining examples of the sports car breed. But what is the elixir that makes them so special? We gather them together to find out. Words by David Vivian. Photography by David Shepherd.
While the basic version of the M3 generation of the time was limited to 250 km/h (280 km/h were optionally possible), the GTR had a mighty 295 km/h at its disposal. Track tool meets production sports car: BMW M3 GTR “Street” and BMW M3 Coupé. The BMW M3 GTR Race Car '01 is a race car produced by BMW. Based on the fourth generation (E46) model, it appears in Gran Turismo 4, Gran Turismo PSP, Gran Turismo 5 and Gran Turismo 6. It is the #42, driven by J.J. Lehto and Jörg Müller, who participated in the GT class of the 2001 American Le Mans Series season. The car achieved a 1st place finish in both Driver's and Team's Championships Back in 2001, BMW decided to take on Porsche once and for all. The stage was the American Le Mans series; an endurance racing competition run to the same rules as the annual 24 hours event. BMW had found the E46 M3 to be outgunned by the performance of the Porsche 911 GT3-RS. The standard fit litre straight-six in the M3 lacked the power to rival the rear-engined Stuttgart racer. To address this, BMW developed a brand new 4 litre, 500hp, V8 engine. The fact they didn’t sell a V8 M3 was a mere technicality; the ALMS rules were so loosely worded it wasn’t important. Of greater significance was a race car which looked as awesome as this: Run by the Schnitzer Motorsport and PTG teams, the GTR had the metal to back up its looks. Winning its class in 7 of the 10 ALMS rounds for that year, along with the championship, the GTR was dominant in 2001. So successful that Porsche complained; they claimed the M3 was not “in the spirit” of GT racing when a road-car equivalent could not be bought. To counter, BMW offered 10 road versions for sale €250,000 after the season had ended. The street version was detuned, and lacked the visual clout of the racer along with its flame spitting side-exhausts: For the 2002 season the rules were changed. BMW would need to sell 100 cars and 1000 units of the V8 engine; an unrealistic proposition. The Munich team withdrew, allowing Porsche to return to winning their GT title without competition. Until 2010 at least, when BMW returned with that same V8 engine in the new E90 M3 GTR. As the M3 road car was now a V8, they were truly within the “spirit of’ GT racing. Consecutive BMW titles in 2010 and 2011 must make Porsche wish they had kept quiet a decade earlier. The E90 GTR may now be legitimate, but the E46 will always be more special for pushing GT racing to the limit of its rules. It also happens to be one of my favourite racing cars of recent years. Poza graczami i fanami BMW o GTR pamięta mało kto – a szkoda, bo to zarazem jedyna odmiana M3 E46, którą wyposażano w silnik V8. Fot. Zakres zmian obejmował montaż ABS-u i kontroli trakcji (niedozwolonych w ALMS) i zastosowanie w układzie dolotowym zwężek o średnicy 32 mm, zamiast stosowanych wcześniej zwężek o średnicy 30,4 mm. A to pozwoliło na podniesienie mocy z dotychczasowych ok. 450 KM do ponad 500 (wersja drogowa miała ok. 350-380 KM). Pomimo dość zaawansowanego wieku konstrukcji, pojazd wygrał maratony w klasie prototypów w 2004 i 2005 r. fot. Young Timers Garage

History. 2004 BMW Team Schnitzer BMW Motorsport official team BMW M3 GTR test livery PRE-SEASON (Monza February 2004) preview.jpg. 309.8 KB · Views: 720. Sometimes life rains happy little flowers. Take the other day, for example. There I was, having an otherwise normal day working out of my firm’s office in lovely Columbus, Ohio, and suddenly I wasn’t. Alien abduction can be the only explanation because there can’t be any logical reason I suddenly found myself in the race shop of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing in Hilliard, Ohio, standing next to one of the most iconic race cars of all time: The BMW-powered McLaren F1 the pantheon of sports cars, the Gordon Murray-designed McLaren F1 sits at the highest step of any possible pedestal; it’s so iconic, it’s virtually mythic. And the race car that was born from the road car project (and begrudgingly by Murray at that) still exists as some sort of almost unbelievable footnote, a seemingly effortless tilting of the race world’s axis that hasn’t really been replicated since. It was a car so extraordinary that it won the overall victory at Le Mans on its first try, when it did so in 1995. The BMW S70/2 V12 engine was the beating heart of the F1 GTR and was used by BMW in the F1, the V12 LM and LMR Le Mans prototypes (and rather humorously in the one-off X5 Le Mans built to celebrate BMW’s overall victory at Le Sarth in 2000). The 6-liter motor made 618-hp and 480 lb-ft of torque and redlined at 7500rpm. Ironically, Le Mans GT1 class rules limited the amount of horsepower the race motors could make, so courtesy of an air restrictor, the F1 GTR’s engine actually made slightly less power (closer to 600-hp) than the road car. This slight limitation was more than compensated by the dramatically more aggressive aero package and lower overall weight on the race car, as evidenced by it achieving mph on the Mulsanne Straight when it arrived at Le Mans in particular car, chassis #17R, was campaigned at Le Mans in 1996 by BMW Motorsports (in conjunction with their Italian partner, Bigazzi Team SRL) and finished 8th overall (and 6th in the GT1 class). Nelson Piquet, Johnny Cecotto, and Danny Sullivan shared driving duties. It’s now part of BMW North America’s BMW Classics collection and is maintained in pristine running condition by the mechanical wizards of BMW Team RLLR. And it’s most assuredly no museum queen; it last bared its teeth at this year’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca under the hot shoe of BMW factory driver Bill Auberlen. (To get an idea of what this beast sounds like from the cockpit, check out this clip on Axis of Oversteer.)The F1 GTR shares the iconic scissor doors and majority of internal mechanicals with the road car but in race car trim is about as raw and purposeful as you’d imagine. The F1 GTR also shares the road car’s central seating position, with two vestigial jump seats positioned on either side and slightly rearward. Getting in through the lattice of roll cage and into the central seat takes more than a few acrobatics, but once I pretzeled thusly, the fit of the cockpit and vista over the car’s snout feels perfect; the physical presence of the giant BMW V12 behind my head is palpable, and the aluminum shifter is perfectly at hand. Come on guys, let me fire this monster up! I think I may have blinded someone with my grin. And since a sister car, chassis #21, sold at a Gooding & Co. auction in 2014 for $ I was really glad I didn’t ding it getting in or all wonderful things must be, my time in the car was all too short (though I think I was a bit more graceful folding myself out). But what an amazing experience with an absolutely astounding piece of automotive and racing history. One I’ll never forget.(Extra special thanks to Steve Dickson and Brian Marks from RLLR for making the alien abduction possible.)[Source: KanonOnCars] The BMW M3 GTR is a magical car. Trzeba go zbudować! By zmniejszyć masę E46, zderzaki, maskę, dach i tylny spojler wykonano z włókna węglowego. Siłę docisku aerodynamicznego zwiększono poprzez radykalną zmianę kształtu przedniego zderzaka, zintegrowanie tylnego z dyfuzorem oraz przytwierdzenie do klapy bagażnika lotki i klasycznego spojlera. The BMW M3 GTR appears in Need for Speed: Most Wanted 5-1-0 and is unlocked upon defeating Blacklist Racer #1 - Clarence "Razor" Callahan. For the GT race car, see BMW M3 GTR GT (E46) For the standard M3 car, see BMW M3 (E46) The 2001 BMW M3 GTR (E46) is a road-legal homologation produced by BMW to allow the V8-powered race car to compete in the 2002 American Le Mans Series season. It had a limited production run of 10 units and was engineered as a near perfect replication of the racing M3 GTR. The car shares many of the weight saving aspects from the race car which it is based on. Large amounts of carbon fibre are used on the body for parts such as the roof and the rear spoiler, which also improves the car's aerodynamics in much the same manner as the race car. The road car has nearly no forms or manifestations of comfort equipment. The 4 litre V8 engine is similar to the V8 engine used in the racing car although it has been adapted and altered to meet emission standards as well as noise regulations. It features a few extra additions over the race car such as additional bonnet cooling slits, road-sport suspension, dry sump lubrication, a two-disc sport clutch, and a variable M differential. Despite BMW's efforts to produce three prototypes and three sold road models, the ALMS' rules were changed for the 2002 season to require that at least 100 units and 1,000 engines be built for a car to qualify for the season, forcing BMW to withdraw the race car from the series. Games Need for Speed: Most Wanted The BMW M3 GTR appears in the Black Edition release of Need for Speed: Most Wanted. It has a short gear ratio, giving it good acceleration to reach its top speed with ease, and also has a great handling, making it a great choice for twisty tracks. Need for Speed: World The BMW M3 GTR was added into the car dealership on March 5, 2010 during the first closed beta as a tier 3 vehicle. Since August 22, 2012, it has been featured as a B class vehicle. It performs well within its class due to well rounded performance traits including a powerful nitrous boost and good handling. It can master high-speed as well as low-speed corners quickly thanks to sufficient traction and a high steering precision. In terms of acceleration, it can keep up with other B Class cars, although it might be lacking to A class cars with high overall ratings. Top speed is 186 mph (300 km/h). Players may find the car to be a valuable competitor for racing. Despite its underwhelming power, the M3 GTR has better handling than most in-game cash offered cars such as the Ford GT, which has somewhat stiff handling. The Lotus Evora outperforms the M3 GTR but is also less useful in police chases because of a lighter body. Then, finally, certainty: at the 12 Hours of Sebring in March 2001, the BMW M3 GTR, helmed by JJ Lehto and Jörg Müller, finishes on the podium in its first race. The team embrace. They all know: This is the start of a new era in American motorsport. From now on, this vehicle owns the racetracks of the American Le Mans Series. Victories in this series were the highest accolade for the US market. But the way there was hard and the effort required enormous. The extraordinary story of the BMW M3 more Racing machines at the turn of the millennium: The BMW M3 GTR "Street" and the BMW M3 GTR racing version derived from it. THE WAY TO SUPERSPORT STATUS. With the launch of the BMW M3 E46 in 2000, BMW M had already sent a strong signal to the sportscar market. Besides the deployment in European race series, the vehicle was also supposed to make an impression on US motorsport. An anything but easy task, as the competition in the GT class was strong and experienced. The engine development engineers at BMW motorsport soon agreed that a more potent power unit than the straight six of the series version would have to be used. The solution was the development of a compact, especially light V8 engine. Read more A RACING CAR WITHOUT A PERMIT. For the 2001 season, the race-capable BMW M3, officially called the BMW M3 GTR, was ready to roll. The team’s trump card was the V8 high-performance engine with 330 kW (460 hp). A full aluminium, naturally aspirated engine with 90-degree bank angle, four valves per cylinder, four overhead camshafts, chain drive and mechanical bucket tappets. With this special high-performance power unit under the bonnet, the vehicle was intended to compete in a series-based racing category. There was just one problem: The new engine wasn’t standard in any series version of the M3. Strictly speaking, the M3 GTR was a prototype and so didn’t fulfil the homologation regulations for the ALMS GT series. Thus, production and sales of a small series of street-legal M3 GTRs had to be more THE NATIVITY OF THE BMW M3 GTR STRASSENVERSION. The time window according to the regulations was just 12 months. A tight schedule to get at least ten homologation vehicles finished after the presentation of the racing car. But the plan worked: BMW furnished proof of production just in time. Ten road-legal cars were produced. The debut of the M3 GTR Street followed at the Petit Le Mans event in Braselton, Georgia, in more 5 POWERFUL FACTS: 01 Max. output: 258 kW (350 hp) 02 Max. torque: 365 Nm at 5,000 rpm 03 Displacement: 3,997 cm3 04 Curb weight: 1,350 kg 05 Vmax: 295 km/h The P60B40 was used exclusively in the BMW M3 GTR Strassenversion. MOTORSPORT – SLIGHTLY RESTRICTED. The most important benchmark for the configuration of the BMW M3 GTR Strassenversion was the use of the same V8 engine as in the racing version – the P60B40. The car thus also adopted its competition-proved dry sump lubrication. Reliable and in compliance with the rules, the power unit from the race car could be watered down a little for use in the series version. The result was still a more than potent drive unit, which did its work with 258 kW (350 hp) under the characteristic more The difference in performance was in particular necessary regarding to noise and exhaust regulations. Side fact: This engine was never used for any other series contrast to the race version with sequential transmission, the M3 GTR “Street” had a 6-gear manual gearbox with a two-disc motorsport clutch and a variable limited slip differential. The M3 GTR Strassenversion, which was only available in Titan silver metallic, had a sleek and slim, all-black interior: By excluding comfort features, the two-seater sports car stayed on the heels of the BMW M3 GTR. The message in the sales leaflet sounds plausible: “Those who want to win, have to be able to do without – the puristic interior of a winner”. That also meant: no air conditioning, no radio and most definitely no rear more A SHORT HISTORY OF SUCCESSFUL MOTORSPORT. In 2001, the BMW motorsport M3 GTR achieved 1st and 3rd places in seven out of ten races in the ALMS GT series. Much to the annoyance of the competition. The reaction manifested itself in a demand to tighten the regulations. And they got their way: The definition of “series model” was changed from ten to a minimum of 100 homologation models which had to be produced. Thus, the withdrawal of the BMW M3 GTR was sealed – after just one very successful season in US motorsport. In Europe, the GT car still had a future: a few M3 GTRs were deployed with great success between 2003 and 2005, including at the 24-hour race on the more THE UNICORN. Of the BMW M3 E46 models. At its presentation in 2001, the BMW M3 GTR Strassenversion sent a signal, in particular as regards price – and it wasn’t exactly a bargain: you had to shell out 250,000 Euro if you wanted to own this uncompromising driving machine. A lot of money for a BMW M3 – from today’s standpoint no bad investment. The sports coupé is as legendary as a unicorn and highly sought after by collectors. It’s more or less impossible to get hold of one. Which makes putting a realistic market price for a M3 GTR “Street” pretty well impossible.
